Tips for Recruiting Members
Health Reps
Does your school have class reps from every homeroom that sit on the student council? Build on this by having a health rep from every class. That student will sit on one of your school's health-related clubs, such as TATU.
Make it Official
Students involved in school clubs receive extra credits, awards and recognition from the SRC...make sure your anti-tobacco club is part of this. More students will be encouraged to get involved and commit if they know they will receive recognition for their hard work. As a bonus, once you are an official club under the SRC, you may be eligible for yearly funding from them.
Grade 9 Orientations
Hold an orientation assembly for all new grade 9's. Have student clubs, including your TATU club, take a few minutes to explain what they do and encourage participation....emphasize that you want everyone to have a place to get involved. The Leo Hayes TATU club created an awesome video that they show to all grade 9's...with an emphasis on TATU.
Have Fun, Create Fun
As new students see that TATU is a super-fun and cool club to get involved in they will want to sign up...get your name out there and create your reputation!
Visit Classrooms
Consult with your principal/advisor to arrange a classroom visitation schedule. Then, with 2 or 3 members of your club, take a period and visit each class for 5 minutes. Tell the students about your club, some of the fun activities you have planned and invite them to join. Or, encourage them to visit a sign-up table you will have set up at lunch for more information.
Invite Your Friends
Ask all current members to invite one or two people they know. Or...challenge members to invite someone they don't know.
Announce it Over the PA
Announce your meetings and/or and information session over the PA and at a school assembly.
Posters
Design cool posters to advertise your club, and put them up around the school.
Get Other Clubs Involved
Clubs and classes are a great resource for ideas and assistance: the drama class could help you put on a skit for feeder schools, the environmental club could spread the word of the dangers of second-hand smoke, the leadership class could help plan an assembly or tobacco-free event, shop class could build a bench for the courtyard, the art class could paint a mural. Sports teams could adopt Tobacco-Free Sports. What clubs and groups does your school have that could be involved?
Club Extravaganza
If your school has a yearly ‘club extravaganza’ where students get information on and sign up for clubs, make sure your anti-tobacco club is included. But, don't use this as your only recruitment method as not all students will attend the club extravaganza and you will want a diverse group…not just those who are the usual students involved in all the clubs.
Advertise in Your Agenda
Follow the lead of Sussex Regional High and have a page or section of your agenda planners devoted to information about your anti-tobacco club and inviting other students to join the fun!
